Revision of ISO 9001:2015 – What will 2025 bring?

ISO 9001, first published in 1987, has already undergone several revisions, with the latest version released in 2015.

In August 2023, the ISO/TC 176 SC2 technical committee decided to revise the ISO 9001 standard on quality management systems. This decision, announced on August 3, 2023, signals upcoming changes in the future version of the standard, expected to be released in 2025. The revision aims to align the standard with current challenges and trends in quality management.

Main Aspects of the Revision:

Vote on the Revision: Following the vote, 36 committee members supported the revision, 25 opposed it, and 17 abstained.

Scope of the Revision: The revision will address new aspects such as resilience, supply chain management, change management, sustainability, risk management, and organizational knowledge.

Maintaining the Core Structure of the Standard: The core structure of the standard (High-Level Structure, HLS) will be retained, but will be replaced with the new Harmonized Structure (HS), similar to the revision of the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 standard.

Reasons for the Revision: Changes in the business environment, such as increasing complexity, dynamism, and the use of new technologies, are the main reasons for the revision.

Revision Timeline: The revised version of ISO 9001:2015 is expected to be published in December 2025. The first draft of the revision is not yet available.

New Topics in Quality Management:

The revision will focus on aspects such as sustainability, digitalization, and global uncertainty. The working group responsible for the revision will work on innovations that will define the future of quality management.

The revision of ISO 9001:2015 is a response to the rapidly changing business environment. The update aims to align the standard with the current requirements and challenges faced by organizations.
